The Boy Scouts of America Mission Statement:
The mission of the Boy Scouts of America is to serve others by helping to instill core values in young people and in other ways prepare them to make ethical choices throughout their life so that they can achieve their full potential.
Grand Columbia Council:
The Grand Columbia Council through the programs of the Boy Scouts of America serves both its scout youth members and local communities. The following is a listing of the recorded accomplishments and activities of scouts and the service hours provided by scouts where they live. There are countless additional hours of camping, day hikes, playing games and having fun experiences that will be remembered for a lifetime.
A Brief History of Scouting
In the early years of this century, a program called the Boy Scouts was created and introduced to the youth of America. Scouting became synonymous with camping, hiking, and outdoor fun. These, however, are the methods and not the purposes of the Scouting Movement. Personal fitness, citizenship training, and the development of outstanding character became both the founding principles and central purpose of Scouting.
Scouting is intended to be a transfer system for the kinds of values that have enabled America and other nations to prosper economically and socially. In terms of sheer numbers of participants, the Scouting record is impressive. To date, more than 90 million Americans have been members. Needless to say, the Boy Scouts of America has played a major role in the development or our nation's young people for several generations.
The Congress of the United States presented the Boy Scouts of America its first charter on February 9, 1916, for charitable and educational purposes. Three short years later, in 1919, the Grand Columbia Council was founded (then made up of the Fort Simcoe Council and the North Central Council) and has been successfully serving its young people ever since.
The Boy Scouts of America have undergone many changes over the years. Among them, diversifying its programs to allow more opportunities to provide quality, youth-oriented programs to young people, both boys and girls, throughout our service area. Although the methods of Scouting have changed with the times, the values of the program still remain the same: The Grand Columbia Council of the Boy Scouts of America is a service organization devoted to the service of young people, and continues to instill the values that make us better human beings and a better society as a whole: Duty to God, Duty to Our Country and Others, and Duty to Self.
